The Ghost Festival, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival in modern day, Zhong Yuan Jie or Yu Lan Jie (traditional Chinese: 盂蘭節) is a traditional Buddhist and Taoist festival held in Asian countries.

In Sri lank the belief is -- as the man POSSESS un- ending desire, when a person die he harbor unfulfilled desires. After death sprit roam about seeking to fulfill these desires so the living must feed them .However the offering are limited to food only nothing more. Often milk rice only .

They also believe most these sprits appear as crows Crow is a hungry bird needing food all day- they newer get filled eating. So the sri Lankans feed crow with oil rich milk rice so the crow can last a longer without having to seek more food.

There is no special day but possible to make the offering every day any time. sri lank call the offering to Perethayas They are not gods but greedy spirits roam about trying to get food. When do not get the belief is the food that is eaten during functions will be contaminated with sand etc….. They say perethays have come and spoil the food.so the first thing in many functions is to offer Perethayas food. A token place on a plate and kept outside. Sri Lankan do not burn anything.
